Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux

Sainte-Foy-La-Grande is an ancient bastide, founded in 1255 by Alphonse de Poitiers, brother of Saint-Louis, to protect its inhabitants from the incessant invasions of the English. After the death of Alphonse de Poitiers, the bastide of Sainte-Foy was ceded to Edward I (1274). Under Philip IV, in 1293, it returned to France, then in 1303, it was given back to the English crown. From this period and from the following centuries, it has preserved a good number of buildings - one of which is made of wood - that are pleasant to discover during a walk.
Sainte-Foy-La-Grande was the birthplace of the Reclus brothers: Michel Élie, who was director of the National Library and later sentenced to deportation, and Jean-Jacques Élisée, a famous geographer and author of numerous works.
Although Sainte-Foy-La-Grande does not produce a single drop of wine, it gave its name to this appellation. It is true that many goods from the hinterland, including wine, passed through this town on the banks of the Dordogne.
Located in the east of the department, the area known as Sainte-Foy-La-Grande is limited to the north by the Dordogne, to the east and to the south by the departments of Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne. It includes all the communes of the canton of Sainte-Foy, as well as the communes of Pessac-sur-Dordogne, Gensac, Massugas, Landerrouat and Pellegrue.
Like its neighbor Entre-deux-Mers, of which it was a part until 1926, it is a pleasant and picturesque region made up of hillsides with a rugged relief, falling almost steeply onto the Dordogne.
It is very varied: resting on a gravelly subsoil in the valley, clayey-gravelly or clayey-limestone elsewhere, one finds on the surface sometimes strong clayey-limestone soils, sometimes soft sandy-gravelly soils, more or less beaten (boulbènes).
On the edge of the Dordogne, we find the typical modern alluvial soils, particularly suitable for orchards or plant nurseries.

About the wines
Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux offers a full range of quality red and white wines.
The red wines of this region are generally endowed with a deep ruby color. This color immediately expresses the concentration of these wines. Full-bodied or soft, depending on the winemaking process and the winemaker's wishes, they can be good wines for ageing or be drunk young and fruity.
Their tannic structure, wrapped and harmonious, allows them to age well in barrels. This brings to the already complex nose of red berries, undergrowth and leather, vanilla notes of the best quality.

About the wines
In 1874, Edouard Féret, in the third edition of Bordeaux et ses Vins, described the white wines of AOC Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux as being "wines of a beautiful pale yellow color, having sweetness, much finesse, sometimes semi-sweetness and a pleasant bouquet". "These wines tend to improve every day through the development of the cultivation of fine grape varieties. As they are today, they can be classified among the fine white wines of the Gironde and we have no doubt that, the day they become better known, their price will rise significantly"; and to add, in the fourth edition, in 1881: "we will call them the small Sauternes of the Libourne district. Indeed, the 1st growths of Sainte-Foy present, like those of Sauternes, a particular sap, a lot of semi-sweetness and softness, finesse, pleasantness, a set of qualities that puts them far above the other white wines of this district.
Vinified as dry white wines, Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux have light aromas that flatter the nose. Their roundness combined with a slight acidity is pleasant to the palate. In the mouth, long and present, they are tasty, fat, spicy and end with a curious impression of exotic fruits.
These wines are made from Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle and Semillon grapes. Their production has become more important than that of sweet white wines.

About the wines
If today, the Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux semi-sweet and sweet wines are not very well known by consumers, they present, while being modern wines, these same qualities.
Made mainly from perfectly ripe Semillon grapes, they are light, fine and fruity wines. They still have a beautiful golden yellow color and develop aromas of honey, lime blossom, and muscatel; in the mouth, they are smooth.
