In 1999, Philippe Porcheron acquired 4 hectares of vines on the extraordinary Margaux terroir. With Jean-Luc and Muriel Thunevin and Muriel Andraud, producers of Château de Valandraud, he set about making a wine with infinite care: manual leaf removal, green harvests, very low yield, over-ripeness of the grapes. Everything that is not perfect is ruthlessly eliminated. This perfectionist approach, combined with the fabulous Margaux terroir, made it possible to obtain sumptuous grapes with thick, dark black skins, bursting with sugar. The vinification of this growth is done in the cellar, or rather the garage, of Roger Rex, the former owner of the plots farmed by Philippe Porcheron in the Margaux AOC.
The first garage wine of Margaux was born and it was christened “Marojallia”, Margaux in Latin.
Bernard Ginestet long presided over the destiny of the classified growths of Margaux. Having become friends with Philippe Porcheron, he came up with the idea of housing his garage wine in his fantastic building: “Philippe, I live in this immense house, far too big for me; what I would like is for this château to house your wine!” The residence at the entrance to the village of Margaux looks like a sleeping beauty, with a slightly tired section of roof and creaking shutters, but this house has a soul. In 2000, it was done: Philippe Porcheron acquired Bernard Ginestet’s residence, and it would house Marojallia.
From the very first tastings, this wine met with extraordinary success. “Very rich, fruity, scents of vanilla, blackcurrant and liquorice, an intense purple colour combined with roundness, a very great length on the palate.” “Never seen since 1945.” The scores given to this wine place it among the greatest wines of Bordeaux.
Clos Margalaine, whose blend contains less Merlot, will win you over with its finesse and elegance (gold medal at the Concours Général Agricole, gold medal at the Concours de Bordeaux, Excellence Trophy at the Citadelles du Vin).
For the record, we would remind you that M. Philippe Porcheron runs Château Rose Sainte Croix in the commune of Listrac, Le Benjamin de Margalaine in the commune of Avensan, and Château Bouqueyran in the commune of Moulis.
