Château Macay, also known as Château Samonac, comprises about 42 hectares, of which the vines occupy 30 hectares, located on a slope on a soil that is sometimes clay-limestone, sometimes gravelly, planted 2/3 with Merlot and 1/3 with Cabernets and Malbec.
In 1800, this estate was a real wine village with its cellars and cooperage. Topped by its tower, the Forge de Macay was formerly the central place of the estate, where ploughs and farm tools were repaired and horses and oxen were shod.
In 19th-century cellars, the owners have managed to combine the functionality of vinification in stainless steel vats with the tradition of storage and ageing in barrels. A natural water reserve, located outside, parallel to one of the façades of the cellars, keeps the inside of the building at an optimal humidity level for ageing the wine in oak casks.
All of these buildings give this estate a distinctive identity that stands out in the commune of Samonac.
Already appearing in the original edition of our work dating from 1850, this vineyard, handed down from father to son for several generations, exploits an ancestral heritage which, thanks to the care given to cultivation and vinification, makes this wine a much sought-after growth distinguished by a great deal of body. Frédérique and Hervé Descourvières took it over in 2012.
The owners have set themselves the goal of developing a quality policy in order to extract the best potential from the terroir, and base their quality charter on “the taste of time”.
