The estate

In brief

Girdled by the Dordogne and the Garonne, the Entre-deux-Mers region offers a range of soils in which clay, limestone, silica and gravel mingle. On these generous lands, bathed in sunshine, lies the commune of La Sauve.
La Sauve is one of the richest communes in the Gironde in terms of heritage. The influence of its 11th-century abbey extended as far as Bordeaux for centuries.
If in the past pilgrims readily stopped at the Abbey, on the road to Compostela, to find lodging, good food and good drink, it is pleasant today to travel the region and enjoy all its wine tourism stops. The indefinable charm that emanates from it is no doubt the reminiscence of its centuries-old cultural and spiritual past, and of the art of living that has never abandoned it.
On the gravel terroirs of the commune of La Sauve, one kilometre from the Abbey, château Fontenille awaits you.
Located on the gravel rises of the commune, the Fontenille vineyard is given over two thirds to red vines and the remaining third to white vines.
Acquired in 1989, it is remarkably managed by Stéphane Defraine, who puts all his oenological science and his passion into making his wines. The care given to cultivation and vinification, which combines the most modern techniques with tradition, is decisive for quality.
Good pupils, the wines of Fontenille were not slow to receive their rewards. Gold and Silver medals at the various competitions in Paris and Bordeaux, as well as numerous laudatory mentions in the specialist press.
The wines of Fontenille deserve to be tasted and appreciated. They will always be those faithful friends one can count on when life deserves to be celebrated.
The red Bordeaux, a dense wine from a demanding terroir, with an attractive ruby colour and a round structure, all finesse and length, harmoniously marries the fruitiness of youth and the power of maturity, keeping enough resources to age well.
The Entre-deux-Mers dry white, fruity, delicate, complex and well balanced with a lovely richness on the finish, is among the best of the appellation, and demonstrates brilliantly the qualitative renewal of the dry white wines of Bordeaux.
The Bordeaux Clairet, a rosé wine dominated by Cabernet Franc, vinified like a light red, is a real curiosity. Fruit, freshness, tenderness, which does not exclude balance and character.
The Bordeaux rosé, with its very pale and light colour, is very fine on the nose, with fruity aromas of raspberry and grapefruit combined. Presented in a beautiful, attractive bottle, this newcomer to the range is very trendy.
The Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux, aged in new and one-wine barrels, balances classic elegance and devouring sensuality. Made from an equal blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it follows in the line of the great Bordeaux growths.
Château de Fontenille also produces, in limited series, a sweet Cadillac and a Crémant “les bulles de Fontenille” reserved for the faithful of the property…
