Château de Fargues

Sauternes • 170 HA

The estate

In brief

Built in 1306 by the lord Raymond Guilhem de Fargues, who became Lur, then Lur Saluces through marriages in 1472 and 1586, the old château, destroyed by fire in 1687, still proudly raises its solid walls in the Sauternes landscape.
Attached to this place for more than half a millennium, the Lur Saluces family would subsequently become owners, in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, of Châteaux de Malle, Filhot, Coutet and finally d’Yquem. A descendant of this line, Count Alexandre de Lur Saluces has for almost 40 years ensured the continuity of this ancestral property.
With more than 170 hectares, the estate keeps its original vocation, mixed farming. The vineyard, grouped around the château, is entirely within the Sauternes appellation. The present plot structure is to be enriched by new plantings and neighbouring vines. If their qualities are confirmed over time, once they have reached maturity and been brought back into shape, they will be integrated into the present vineyard. Thus in 2024, the Fargues estate should include about 32 hectares capable of producing a Sauternes true to the one that founded the reputation of the cru.
Applying the methods of the great Sauternes that made the reputation of Château d’Yquem, Château de Fargues produces a great sweet wine for laying down. Every year, the same constraints and extreme demands apply to production, in terms of cultivation, harvest, vinification and barrel ageing alike, even if it means not producing a vintage if the highest quality is not there.
Highly sought after by the most demanding enthusiasts, the wines of Château de Fargues reveal their power and complexity after 5 to 10 years. Elegant and of great distinction, the candied and roasted flavours refine with time, and there is then no greater happiness than tasting these nectars aged 30 and 50 years and more!
Works have been under way since 2008 to restore the château, which was destroyed in 1687 by an enormous fire that brought down all the roofs. This extraordinary Clementine palace, now listed on the supplementary inventory of historic monuments, will find a new life through exhibitions, concerts and exceptional tastings.
