Château la Croix-Saint-André

If Château La Croix-Saint-André today occupies a choice place among the crus of the region, this is not solely due to chance, to the potential of its terroir, whose nature is close to that of the Pomerol plateau (cf. Enjalbert geological map), to its grape varieties or even to the age of the vines – some are more than 50 years old. It comes above all from the meticulous, even particular, management practised by the Carayon family in running this estate since 1965.
The whole vineyard has been studied, scrutinised and combed through. This painstaking examination made it possible to distinguish and determine 33 plots according to the nature of the soil, the grape varieties and the age of the vines. Each of them is cultivated and pruned according to its needs. Harvested by machine at optimal ripeness, the crop from each is vinified separately. After a long vatting to extract the maximum of tannins, the wine is aged in oak barrels, a quarter of them new. But this plot-by-plot management does not stop at vinification. Each plot is aged in its own batch of barrels for a duration suited to its specificity and the vintage. The blending of the wines thus obtained takes place only after a rigorous selection – those from vines under 15 years old will be set aside – and only at the final stage: bottling.
The wines of Château La Croix-Saint-André continue their ageing in the château’s cellars for more than two years, before being offered to a loyal clientele. Among them are several hundred personalities from the worlds of the arts, science, medicine, diplomacy, politics and business…
It is in this context, and in homage to Arthur Rubinstein, who particularly appreciated this wine, that Château La Croix-Saint-André, in agreement with Madame Rubinstein and her children, dedicated the 1982 vintage to the memory of the artist.
