This vineyard of 10 hectares is located on the gravel of the west slope of the Haute-Terrasse, in the heart of Pomerol. Vines have been grown here since Gallo-Roman times, but the origin of the name (also a place name) goes back to the 14th century, the era of isolated huts, homes of serfs and settlers.
The clay-gravel soil with a clinker subsoil (a concretion of sand and iron), together with the blend of grape varieties (92% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc), give, after a vatting of about twenty days and ageing in new oak barrels (split rather than sawn oak), a coloured wine with the hue of ripe cherries (characteristic of Merlot-dominant wines), with black glints showing tawny shades as it ages.
It is a wine with a powerful and delicate nose, with candied apricot and game notes, a sustained and fleshy attack, well structured, with a finish that gives it good intense aromatic persistence, whose bouquet and finesse combine harmoniously with a powerful body.
It is a well-balanced wine, with excellent ageing ability, ranked, after rigorous selection at the time of blending, among the greatest crus of Pomerol.
Château La Cabanne produces a second wine, Domaine de Compostelle, from young vines, which makes an excellent second wine with a powerful nose marked by notes of red fruit and cocoa, a velvety development on the palate and round, non-aggressive tannins.
It is an excellent product for a second wine, which, while keeping its ability to age, can be enjoyed quickly.
Les Vignobles Jean-Pierre Estager also run Château Haut-Maillet and Château Plincette in Pomerol, Château La Papeterie in Montagne-Saint-Émilion, Domaine de Gachet in Lalande-de-Pomerol and Domaine des Gourdins in Saint-Émilion.
