The wine estate, located on two gravel rises separated by a small valley, currently covers about fifteen hectares. Its long-standing reputation comes from the production of a sweet white Cérons wine of great finesse.
In 2002, Bernard Leppert, owner of the estate, leased it to Denis Dubourdieu. Since then, the former vineyard, mainly white, has been largely replanted with red varieties in order to produce, on these exceptional gravels, a great classic Bordeaux. However, Château Haura still makes a few barrels of a delicious sweet wine from noble rot.
The terroir of Château Haura is representative of the best soils of the Graves appellation. It consists of gravel rises with two horizons. The loose upper horizon, about 1 metre deep, is largely colonised by the roots of the vine, while the lower horizon is formed of compact gravel. This type of soil, with low water reserves, regularly subjects the vine to a summer water stress that is favourable to good ripening of the grapes.
Maintained exclusively by traditional ploughing, the soil of our vineyard receives no herbicides. Organic manures are based on plant composts. Disbudding, trellising and leaf removal are carried out by hand with meticulous care. Thus “cultivated like a garden”, in an ordered and preserved nature, our vines ripen concentrated, flavoursome grapes early, with the sweetness and aromatic brilliance of fresh fruit that we wish to find in our wines.
Haura Rouge has the style of a great classic left-bank Bordeaux, expressing the tannic freshness and smokiness of Cabernet Sauvignon on gravel combined with the silkiness of Merlot.
Denis Dubourdieu also owns Châteaux Doisy-Daëne and Cantegril in Barsac. Denis and Florence Dubourdieu also own Clos Floridène in Pujols-sur-Ciron in the Graves and Château Reynon in the Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. All of his crus make up the Denis Dubourdieu Domaines range.
