Admirably located at the gates of the old city of Saint-Émilion, Clos Fourtet extends its vineyard over the clay-limestone plateau east of the forecourt of the collegiate church. The vines of Clos Fourtet stretch over a gentle slope to the north.
Since the 18th century, Clos Fourtet has been a 20-hectare estate, partly surrounded by small walls, with its fine residence built of golden dressed stone drawn from its subsoil. The cellars thus formed extend over twelve hectares, a small part of which is devoted to the storage and ageing of the wines in barrels.
In the continuity of this long-term work, Philippe Cuvelier has since 2001 passionately pursued the improvement of this prestigious estate; in particular, he has undertaken the complete renovation of the vat room for an optimisation of the quality of the raw material and good plot selection, an approach that is indispensable to allow the fullest expression of this great terroir.
Passionate about the enhancement of great terroirs, Philippe Cuvelier did not stop there. In 2008, with his son Matthieu, they took in hand the destiny of Château Poujeaux in Moulis-en-Médoc and in 2013 two Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Émilion, Château les Grandes Murailles (neighbour of Clos Fourtet) and Château Côte de Baleau.
