Originally a Carthusian cloister, Château Fombrauge is a fine estate dating from the 17th century. Its name is due to M. Dumas de Fombrauge, who owned it and was one of the pioneers of viticulture.
The vineyard, whose age is evident, extends over the three communes of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse and Saint-Hippolyte. On slopes and plateaux, the soils are either clay-limestone on a limestone subsoil, or Fronsac molasse.
Thus, through the diversity of these different soils, the vineyard has a certain originality.
Planted 89% with Merlot, the 58 hectares of vines in production are worked traditionally, with grass cover between the rows to moderate yields.
The harvest is done by hand, maceration periods are long and ageing takes place in oak barrels, 50% new, for 18 months.
The renown of Château Fombrauge is nothing new, since in 1867, on the occasion of the Exposition Universelle in Paris, the wines of Fombrauge won a gold medal.
Closer to our time, in 1978, the C.I.A.G. in Paris awarded Château Fombrauge the “Grappe d’Or de la Qualité Française”. They are regularly rated by Robert Parker and feature in many guides.
This comes as no surprise to us, because we know the frankness of bouquet, the suavity, the roundness and the amplitude of Château Fombrauge.
Château Fombrauge is a member of the Académie des Vins de Bordeaux and has been a Grand Cru Classé since 2012. Monsieur Bernard Magrez has owned this château since April 1999.
