The estate

In brief

The Cambon La Pelouse cru, located between Cantemerle and Giscours, on one of the highest points of Macau and at the boundary of Labarde, from which it is separated only by a country lane, combines the bouquet and finesse of the wines of the latter with the roundness and firmness that distinguish the products of the good crus of Macau and Ludon.
The vineyard, made up of choice grape varieties, Cabernet and Merlot, is established on rises formed entirely of thick layers of enormous stones and a sand-silt base. It can produce 300 to 340 tonneaux.
The Cambon La Pelouse cru is one of the oldest in the region; its products once contributed greatly, in France and abroad, to the reputation of the wines of the “Païs du Médoc”.
From the end of the 17th century, sent to England, they fetched 400 livres per tonneau and more. Later, they were shipped to Holland, where they were often paid at prices higher than those obtained in France by the 5th and even some 4th growths.
Several owners succeeded one another in the 19th century with more or less ambition. The property was overlooked in 1855 by the classification of the Grands Crus. Its owner, the Baron de Villeneuve, presented Château Cantemerle, the neighbouring property, which was classified as a 5th growth.
In 1932, Châteaux Cambon la Pelouse and Trois Moulins were admitted to the Crus Bourgeois syndicate with the Supérieur ranking.
After the severe frosts of 1956, the owner of Cambon La Pelouse, M. Faure, took over the vineyard of Château Trois Moulins.
In 1974, the Carrère family replanted the vineyard entirely, then sold it to the Marie family in 1996.
Since 2006, Nicolas has joined his father Jean-Pierre in running the property. He is responsible for communication, reception at the property and commercial support for the wines. It was also at this time that 80% of the vineyard of neighbouring Château Guitot-Fellonneau was taken on under a tenant-farming lease.
Numerous investments have made it possible to progress in leaps and bounds. Growing methods have returned to the traditional practices of the Grands Crus, and the vat room and cellars have been completely reorganised. Production has regained the qualitative rank it held in the previous century. The wine of Château Cambon La Pelouse has been bought en primeur for 11 years by the best négociants of the Place de Bordeaux.
In the summer of 2011, a Wine Shop dedicated to the sale and tasting of the estate’s wines was opened.
