The estate

In brief

For many years Château Branas Grand Poujeaux was like a sleeping beauty. Bought by Justin Onclin in the spring of 2002, it is living a new story. Its vineyard, admirably situated on the famous Grand-Poujeaux gravel plateau, between Château Chasse-Spleen and Château Poujeaux, certainly motivated the new owner to completely review the growing and vinification methods of the property.
A major reflection was carried out on the terroir in order to optimise the plots and a varied range of grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot). The vines, whose venerable age gave hope of grapes of great quality, thus underwent a veritable lace-work revolution. While applying new growing methods to it, the value of each plot has been preserved: that is the secret of the expression of a terroir, putting in place everything necessary to turn a vineyard into a garden, and having a talented gardener to preserve the grapes.
Branas Grand-Poujeaux has been able to take advantage of the modern era, one in which everything is done to serve the grapes up in the cellar on a “silver” platter. Harvesting, small crates, double sorting table, small temperature-controlled wooden vats, gravity filling, vertical press. There is no recipe here: the vintage is in command. Each vat corresponds to a plot and will receive the vinification it is due.
From the 2002 vintage, the wines of the cru have followed this rising curve of quality.
