Located on a very pretty rise of Garonne gravel, on the banks of the Gironde, Château Loirac enjoys all the benefits of its location, namely poorly fertile soils, sunshine and a microclimate that allow healthy, concentrated grapes to be harvested at full ripeness. Thus, with a blend of grape varieties typical of the appellation, 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and soon Petit Verdot, the wine produced is rich and fruity, with a solid frame that is a sign of fine ageing ability. The vineyard today extends over nearly 15 ha.
Every care is taken in both the vineyard and the cellar. Cultivation is sustainable, the soils are ploughed or grassed between the rows according to the vegetation, the foliage (which produces the sugar for the fruit) is trimmed as high as possible and leaves are removed on one or two sides, always according to observation, and the grapes are monitored so that they can be harvested at optimal ripeness. The wine is made in the same spirit, never identically from one year to the next, in order to obtain, after traditional fermentation and 12 to 15 months of ageing in barrels, a drink that always has Médoc character but also reflects the vintage, that is, the result of the whims and favours of Mother Nature. All this work is also done in a spirit of sustainable development, taking account of the impact on the environment.
Convinced that chance does not explain everything, the wines obtained are rich and deep, tannic yet silky, with notes of concentrated black fruit, subtly toasty and vanilla-scented from their ageing. It is thanks to everyone’s efforts that Château Loirac has been a Cru Bourgeois du Médoc since 2009.
Of note, in some years the estate also produces Rosé de Loirac in very small quantities, but also, and this is even rarer, a wine that the owners wanted for themselves, that is, the best that can be made at Château Loirac, given time and the selection of cuvées. This production is sold exclusively in wooden cases of 6 and does not exceed 500 cases. Its name is still being considered.
