The estate

In brief

The parish of Sainte-Gemme was attached to Cussac in 1793; by that time, the château had already disappeared and the estate belonged to the same owner as Lachesnaye. Reviving the oldest of traditions, the Bouteiller family decided to restore this terroir to honour. Tastings from the 1982 vintage onwards give very interesting results, which confirm, if confirmation were needed, that where the terroir is present, worth does not wait for the passing of years.
The church of Sainte-Gemme was demolished around 1800, along with that of Cussac-le-Vieux. At that time, a new church was rebuilt in what is now the heart of the commune of Cussac-Fort-Médoc, the centre of the two former parishes.
The terroir of Château de Sainte-Gemme is made up of Garonne gravel resting on clays from the decomposition of limestone. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon share the blend in equal parts, thus producing fruity, elegant wines with good structure. These wines receive the same attentive care as is given to their neighbours, Lanessan and Lachesnaye.
