The estate

In brief

Located on the edge of the commune of Pauillac, world-renowned for its wines, château Hourtin-Ducasse is part of what it is logical to call a great quality vineyard.
Its name no doubt comes from the juxtaposition of those of two of its former owners: M. Hourtin in the 18th century and M. Fleury-Ducasse in the 19th century.
Today, this estate is run by Marie-Noëlle and Michel Marengo, who acquired it in 1976.
The 1982 vintage of château Hourtin-Ducasse was noticed by Gault et Millau; the 1985 vintage received a gold medal at the Concours agricole de Paris, and since 1989 the various vintages have been regularly rewarded at the Mâcon and Blaye-Bourg competitions. To date, the last 25 vintages have received more than 50 awards, confirming that since M. Marengo took this growth in hand, its production has further asserted itself and improved to the great satisfaction of all: owners and enthusiasts.
Born of the desire to have a lovely summer freshness to enjoy among friends, the Marengo family decided in 2003 to create its rosé. Neither a Clairet nor a Bordeaux rosé, Les Roses de Marie is made partly in the manner of a Côtes-de-Provence.
Over the last two years, the château has welcomed new residents. To help with cultivation practices borrowed from conservation agriculture techniques, new assistants dedicated to cleaning the leaves have been recruited. Two species were chosen, very effective at removing from nature what could harm the development of the grapes: the tit and the bat. The first gorges itself on the equivalent of its own weight in insects and, with its mate, supplies up to 500 a day to its brood. The second takes over from the tit at dusk and eliminates more than 3000 each night during the summer season. Nesting places have been provided so that they can find shelter.
In addition, part of the roof of the canopy has been covered with photovoltaic panels to help reduce CO2 emissions.
