The Château du Tertre estate borders Château Cantenac-Brown and Château Brane-Cantenac to the north, and Château Giscours to the east. It is located on one of the highest gravel rises in the Médoc, which is where its name comes from.
Its vineyard, in a single block, is remarkable for its fortunate exposure, the composition of its fine gravel and the choice of grape varieties, in which Cabernet Sauvignon largely dominates. Its wines, of great finesse, are distinguished by their fine tannic power, a guarantee of excellent ageing potential.
From the 12th century the estate belonged to the lordship of Arsac. Thomas de Montaigne, brother of Michel de Montaigne, on marrying Jacquette d’Arsac, styled himself in 1590: “Lord of the Noble Houses of Arsac and Castéra and others in the Médoc”. In the 17th century, the lordship passed from the house of Montaigne to that of Arrérac and to the Ségur family.
In the mid-18th century this estate belonged to Mr Mitchell, of Irish origin, who was also the leading bottle manufacturer in the Bordeaux region. A street in Bordeaux still bears his name, on the site of his glassworks.
Éric Albada Jelgersma, a businessman of Dutch origin and owner of S.E. Château Giscours since 1995, bought this property in 1997. Very substantial investments have been made to restructure the cellar and the vineyard and thus provide an even more efficient working tool, worthy of the terroir. The château, a delightful Régence-period manor house that overlooks the whole vineyard, has been completely renovated.
