A neighbour of Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Duhart-Milon was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1962. Oral tradition describes “Sieur Duhart” as a privateer of Louis XV who settled in Pauillac on his retirement, and whose house on the port of Pauillac inspired the Duhart-Milon wine label. From the early 18th century, the wines of Milon served as an income for the Lord of Lafite and were included in the “second wines” of Château Lafite, already testifying to the recognised quality of the terroir. The 1855 Classification raised Duhart-Milon by ranking it as the only 4th Growth of the commune of Pauillac.
The 76-hectare vineyard in the Pauillac appellation is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (67%) and Merlot (33%). It extends on the western side of Château Lafite Rothschild, on the hillsides of Milon, which continue the Carruades de Lafite plateau. The average age of the vines is 30 years.
The techniques used remain traditional, with strict control of yields, harvesting by hand and a great deal of work carried out manually throughout the year.
