A Bordeaux start-up to regenerate soils

Soil micro-organisms are essential to the soil’s ecosystem services. In vineyards, fragile ecosystems are affected by the lack of crop rotation, soil tillage and the use of chemicals. StarFish BioScience, a young start-up from Bordeaux, aims to restore the microbial ecosystems of vineyard soils by developing products to re-establish key soil bacteria.
The company’s patented technology is based on analysing the DNA of soil bacteria to model the functioning of the ecosystem according to the characteristics of the vineyard terrain.

Currently, the company is focusing on mapping vineyard bacteria, providing data useful to growers for assessing the impact of their practices on the microbiological health of the soils.
In time, the company plans to develop products based on key soil bacteria to improve the functioning of bacterial ecosystems and strengthen the resilience of crops in the face of climate and environmental challenges.

Who is StarFish BioScience?

StarFish BioScience is a young Bordeaux company created at the end of 2023 and headed by its founder, Sandrine Claus, a microbiota expert. The company aims to develop innovative products derived from keystone soil bacteria in order to repair microbial ecosystems damaged by agricultural practices and to strengthen the natural functioning of these ecosystems. The company’s objective is thus to act to optimise the functioning of the soil’s microbial ecosystem in order to maximise its performance.

StarFish BioScience is supported by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine regional incubator UNITEC and by the Start-Up Win incubator, specialising in WineTech, of the Bernard Magrez group. To finance its operations, the young company has raised to date €900,000 from Seventure Partners, a private equity fund specialising in life-science start-ups. The team is structured around microbiota-analysis expertise, with a doctor in bioinformatics and an agronomist engineer who has just joined the team as development director.
