The estate

In brief

Part of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, this cru is one of the last surviving Graves wines from Mérignac. Neighbouring the prestigious Haut-Brion and Pape Clément vineyards, this harmonious ensemble extends over some twenty hectares of vines. Laclotte, the father of a long line of builders in old Bordeaux, built Picque Caillou in 1758 as his country home. After three generations in the Denis family, the vineyard was acquired by Isabelle and Paulin Calvet in 1997. This cru has an evocative name, reminding us of the presence of a stony terroir whose origins lie in the millennia-old overflows of the Garonne. The subsoil, made up of fine, highly filtering Günzian gravel, gives the wines of Picque Caillou the finesse and elegance typical of the Bordeaux Graves. Since 1993, Château Picque Caillou has been producing a very small quantity of white wine (6,000 bottles a year) matured on fine lees and in barrels. Opposite Picque Caillou, Château Chênevert and its 4 hectares of vines are an integral part of Château Picque Caillou’s production. Since the 2002 vintage, Château Picque Caillou has produced a second wine: La Réserve de Picque Caillou. Château Picque Caillou is a member of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux.
