Château Larmande is one of the oldest vineyards in Saint-Émilion; some of the town’s archives indicate that jurats were already visiting the estate in 1585 to inspect the wines. Situated 1200 metres from the town, the vineyards of Château Larmande are planted in a variety of soils and subsoils (clay-limestone, clay-siliceous and ancient sands), whose geological diversity characterises the structure of the wines: elegance and complexity, with silky, fine and complex tannins. The average age of the vineyard is 30 years, with 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are grown in the traditional way: ploughing, green harvesting, hand-picking and rigorous sorting. The winery was completely renovated in 2003 and now favours parcel-based vinification with small, temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wines are matured in French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months before being bottled at the château. Château Larmande produces a second wine, Cadet de Larmande Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, which is made with the same care as its illustrious elder: vinification in small batches, maturing in one and two-wine barrels for 15 to 16 months.
