In 1948, Château Haut-Bages Monpelou was separated from Château Duhart-Milon, the 4th Growth of Pauillac and currently owned by the Rothschild family of Lafite. Mr Marcel Borie bought it from the Castéja family, who had owned this historic estate in Pauillac since the 15th century. Émile Castéja took over from him and added neighbouring plots to the estate, thus reforming the original vineyard, which grew from 10 to 15 hectares. Château Haut-Bages Monpelou is the younger brother of Château Batailley, a Pauillac Grand Cru Classé, and is managed by the technical team from Château Batailley. The vines are located in the heart of Pauillac. The vineyards are planted with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon respectively, and Philippe Castéja continues the tradition of quality cultivation and vinification applied to all the family’s vineyards. The wine produced is elegant and full-bodied, thanks to the careful selection of grape varieties.
