At the beginning of the 20th century, the father of William Darnajou, a cooper, farmed his land with mixed farming. Then, in the 1940s, when William and Léontine Darnajou took over to ensure continuity, the estate was divided between vines, vegetable crops and livestock.
It was not until the 1960s that Henri Darnajou, William’s son, developed the wine-growing side. The wine began by being sold mainly in bulk to the Libourne négociants. But very quickly, Henri Darnajou, convinced of the quality of his wines, began selling in bottles. Gradually, he succeeded in building a loyal clientele of private customers throughout France.
On the death of his father in 1994, Jean Darnajou, 4th generation, took over the family farm at the age of twenty, running it with the help of his mother Colette Darnajou. Perpetuating the family tradition, he gradually modernised the estate, implementing the most recent techniques (temperature control, pneumatic press).
In 2004, Jean joined forces with his brother-in-law, Patrick Merle, creating the SCEA du Château des Moines, and a new commercial expansion began.
The property, keeping its traditional practices, deploys its know-how to offer wines with rich bouquets and a fine colour, with great ageing capacity.
The wines of château des Moines are particularly appreciated by French customers, but also by foreign ones, notably in Belgium.
The family also farms another growth, sold under the name “Cuvée Henri”, an excellent terroir in Bordeaux.
