This property was founded by Cistercian monks of the abbey of Faize (Artigues-de-Lussac), of which Montesquieu’s brother was prior.
It was bought by the Tapon family at the end of the last century and has therefore been farmed with the same respect for tradition for six generations.
The vines of château des Moines are established on hillsides and plateaux with clay and clay-limestone soils over a rocky subsoil, in one of the high places of Bordeaux viticulture.
The wines are full-bodied and full of breeding and, despite their generosity, show a great deal of suppleness and distinction. After bottle ageing, besides their pleasing brick-red hue, they acquire a remarkable bouquet.
These wines won, in 1904, a Grand Prix at the Universal Exposition in Saint Louis (United States).
The Tapon family also owns château Gay-Moulins in Montagne, château Raymond Tapon in Saint-Émilion and château La Croix-Saint-Jean in Néac (Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation). It also produces, in the Bordeaux appellation, château Sirène du château Bellevue and Sirène Madame Tapon in the Bordeaux blanc A.O.C.
