Château Haut Gros Caillou

The estate

In brief

In 1991, Alain Thiénot acquired Château Haut Gros Caillou, in association with James François, with the aim of widening his range of wines in the noblest appellations of the Bordeaux region. 2007 marked a decisive stage in the qualitative improvement of the estate, with the entry of Dourthe into the Thiénot group. The expertise of Dourthe’s teams was called on, from the management of the vine to vinification, and today allows the whole estate to benefit from the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation.
The vineyard extends over 7 ha, with certain exceptional gravel plots adjoining those of Château Monbousquet. The presence of warm, gravelly soils favours the ripening of late varieties such as the Cabernets. This natural feature explains the large proportion of Cabernet Franc in the estate’s overall grape varieties.
Since 1998, a particularly high-quality plot, bearing the name “Cassagne” , has been worked and vinified to produce a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru in very small quantity.
In order to draw the best expression from this terroir, it was decided that only the great vintages would be reserved for the production of this top-of-the-range cuvée, the Cuvée Cassagne.
The wines produced on the estate are fruity, elegant, supple and finely oaked.
