The estate

In brief

Located on the gravel rises of Saint-Médard-d’Eyrans, château de Quantin is a very old wine estate. In 1728, this small bourdieu, made up of a modest manor house surrounded by land, pine groves and vine nurseries, belonged to Maître Pierre Fayet, private secretary to the King’s first advocate at the Parliament of Bordeaux. The Fayet family counted several generations of brilliant lawyers. It remained owner of the estate until 1800 and gave it its present appearance.
In 1800, Louis Quantin bought it. He would keep it for only six years… Just long enough to give it his name. In 1806, château de Quantin was resold to Daniel Pölhs, an important Bordeaux négociant of Germanic origin. His trading house, based in the Chartrons, was flourishing and his trade with the cities of Stettin (Prussia) and Hamburg was very extensive. It was therefore quite natural that the wines of château de Quantin were, from this time on, exported to these merchant cities of northern Europe.
From 1857, the Kort family (of German origin) owned it. Mathieu Kort was a veterinarian in La Brède. His daughter, wife of C. Gervais Koysiewiez, an eminent professor at the Bordeaux faculty, inherited it, but seemed to lose all interest in the family property and sold it at auction in 1889.
In 1881, production of the “Domaine Le Quantin” was approaching 25 barrels of red wine.
Château de Quantin then passed to the Royer and Gaillard families. On the death of Mme Gaillard, the vines were abandoned for nearly a quarter of a century and replaced by horse breeding.
Finding the Quantin terroir excellent, André Lurton, one of whose passions is reviving vineyards fallen into oblivion, acquired it with the farm buildings in 1985 and replanted the vines.
The 37 hectares of the Quantin property are vinified at château de Cruzeau, which lies to the west, separated from it only by a country lane.
