Château Piganeau

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru • 6 HA

The estate

In brief

The château was acquired by M. and Mme Jean-Baptiste Brunot in 1978. The origin of the name is that of the illustrious owner who lived here in the last century. M. Piganeau was director of the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux and one of his passions was painting. His canvases can be found at the property, as well as in the museum and at the town hall of Saint-Émilion. He was also one of the historians of Saint-Émilion and left numerous writings, notably on the history of the Jacobins during the French Revolution.
Château Piganeau is located near the old port of Saint-Émilion and the listed site of the Pierrefite menhir. The latter is the largest megalith in the Gironde, but its origin remains unknown.
Half of the vineyard is planted on strips of recent gravel and half on sand. The nature of these light, warm soils and the proximity of the river create a microclimate favourable to the vine, and the harvest here is very early, as in Pomerol.
MM. Brunot, father and son, oenologists, give the most attentive care to vinification, notably control of fermentation temperatures. The wines obtained are generally supple and elegant and can be enjoyed from the first years, even though they are wines that can be kept for more than 10 years.
The Brunot family also owns Châteaux Tour de Grenet in Lussac, Maledan in the A.O.C. Bordeaux Supérieur and Le Gravillot in Lalande-de-Pomerol.
