The oldest part of Château La Pierrière was built at the end of the 13th century by the lord Izambert. It was a fortified house surrounded by moats cut into the rock.
In 1607, François de Lageard (ancestor of the family) received La Pierrière as a dowry on his marriage to Marguerite de Puyperron. He enlarged the château by creating an inner courtyard, with a magnificent squinch in one of its corners. For a hundred years or so, this courtyard has taken on an exotic character thanks to a clump of banana trees. François de Lageard also had a chapel built near the château.
In 1865, Léonard de Lageard completed the château by having a round tower built for his granddaughter. Passed down through the women, La Pierrière came to the de Marcillac family in 1930.
The vines flourish on a clay-limestone soil with characteristics close to those of Saint-Emilion.
Merlot is in the majority, bringing fruitiness, suppleness and roundness to the wine; the Cabernet Francs and Sauvignons bring the structure that allows the wine to age.
