The estate of Château des Mailles has belonged to the Larrieu family for two centuries. It is located on a clay-limestone hillside in the commune of Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, facing the Garonne and resting on enormous beds of fossil oysters. Benefiting thus from a due-south exposure, the vineyard extends over an area of 30 hectares, of which 25 are devoted to white vines and 4 to red vines.
Traditions are still respected at Château des Mailles, with hand harvesting and vinification in vats, followed by ageing in oak barrels and bottling after three years.
The sweet white wines, of the Sainte-Croix-du-Mont appellation, have a lovely golden-yellow colour, are powerful and distinguished, and have a fine, welcome bitterness on the finish. The range is completed by the production of red Bordeaux, dry white Bordeaux and rosé Bordeaux of excellent quality.
The owners’ seriousness and know-how are rewarded by regular mentions in the specialist journals.
