Château Magondeau is one of the oldest and most renowned vineyards of the first hillsides of Fronsac. It belonged notably to Maître Puiffe de Magondeau, a notary in Libourne.
This estate has been the property of the Goujon family for three generations. Since 1989, Olivier has brought his knowledge to cultivation and vinification. His wife Pascale joined him in 1996, in order to develop sales of the wine abroad.
Exposed at the top of the appellation area, the vineyard benefits from abundant sunshine, allowing it to reach maximum ripeness at harvest. Constant efforts for quality, from pruning the vine through to vinification and ageing (notably manual leaf removal, green harvesting, manual sorting of the harvest, etc.), make it possible to obtain a wine that is fleshy, coloured, balanced and true in taste.
The original cuvée, Château Magondeau Fronsac, has been made by the Goujon family since 1933. It is a wine worked on the fruit of the Merlot, which highlights the great quality of the terroir.
In 1981, a new Fronsac cuvée was born: Château Magondeau BeauSite, aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (1/3 new barrels), giving the wine aromatic complexity with a slightly spicy flavour and rounder tannins.
In 1989, Olivier Goujon widened the range by offering a Château Magondeau Bordeaux rouge and a Château Magondeau Bordeaux rosé (saignée rosé). These two wines come from the youngest vines of the estate.
From 2000, a prestige cuvée admirably completes the estate’s Fronsac offering: Passion de Magondeau, made from a selection of the crop and aged for 15 to 17 months in casks, two thirds of them new. It is distinguished by its superb aromatic palette, roundness and great finesse on the palate.
In 2010, Olivier Goujon planted 60 ares of white grape varieties (70% Sauvignon Gris, 30% Sauvignon Blanc) in order to make, from 2013, a Château Magondeau Bordeaux blanc, a lively, fruity wine with fine freshness and citrus aromas.
The qualities of these wines are regularly highlighted in the Guide Hachette, the Revue des Vins de France, by the Concours Général Agricole, the Concours des Vins de Bordeaux, and internationally through the Decanter World Wine Awards, the Challenge International, the Berliner Wein Trophy, the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, and Wine Enthusiast.
