Château Magnan-Figeac

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru • 10 HA

The estate

In brief

Château Magnan first appears in our edition of 1886. It is ranked a first cru in all our editions from 1893 to 1949. Subsequently, in the absence of cellars, vinification and sales were entrusted to the Saint-Émilion cooperative cellar.
The Moreaud family, aware of the potential of this vineyard and already owners of the adjoining Château Cormeil-Figeac, bought Magnan in 1979 and took back the rights from the cooperative cellar. From that year, bottling has been carried out at the château.
Robert Moreaud, a tireless entrepreneur, set about reorganising the property. He established a new 1.8-hectare planting, bringing the total area to 10 hectares in a single block, built a drainage network and, with his son Richard, replanted and restructured all the plots.
The assets of this vineyard are thus many: a very early-ripening terroir in the commune of Saint-Émilion, 500 metres from the Pomerol appellation, a vineyard in a single block allowing very good technical control, an orientation on a long, due-south slope, naturally drained and outside the hail corridors, and a location in an open, well-ventilated area preventing the appearance of fungal diseases.
This vineyard is a fine example of rebirth that allows Château Magnan-Figeac to regain its former lustre.
Since 1 January 2012, it has been Victor Moreaud and Coraline Moreaud-McAllan (brother and sister) who represent the fourth generation of the family at the helm of the estate. On this occasion the label was redesigned and has a more modern look to dress wines that are gourmand and lightly oaked, combining body with finesse and representing a real example of balanced structure. Wines of medium ageing potential, they will easily accompany contemporary cuisine at an aperitif dinner or a meal among friends.
The Moreaud family is very attached to the independence of its sales through direct selling without intermediaries, straight to distributors in France and abroad. These wines are particularly successful in Germany and China.
