The estate

In brief

Château de l’Hospital is located in Portets, 24 km south of Bordeaux. In the heart of this commune it forms a walled enclosure of about 10 hectares.
At the beginning of the 18th century, it was the “country property” of Jacques de Lhospital, counsellor to the King. The estate had its own wine vessels and made its own barrels. The daughter of Jacques de Lhospital, Anne-Catherine, married Jean-Jacques Fournier de la Chapelle, a high and mighty lord, counsellor to the King, master of requests, intendant of the generality of Auch and colonel of the regiment of the parish of Portets. An aesthete and physiocrat, in 1787, in the last years of the Ancien Régime, he had the present château built, which he named “de l’Hospital” in honour of his wife.
The wines from Château de l’Hospital, rare and superb, were already served at the greatest tables of the European courts.
Since 2012, Monsieur Battistella has been the new owner and is working to revive this historic monument and reveal the full potential of this terroir.
The vineyard covers about 25 ha, planted on a soil of small and large gravel resting on a clay-limestone subsoil. The Hospital team, mindful of the environment, is committed to renovating with a respectful approach: ending chemical weeding, moving to sustainable pest control based on copper and sulphur, using less polluting equipment, etc.
