The name Grate-Cap, the place called where the cellar and vat room stand in the middle of the vines, comes from the Latin words “gratum caput”, which can be loosely translated as: “generous culminating land”.
This vineyard, planted on a gravelly soil with a clay subsoil and iron residues, produces about 50 barrels of a very full-bodied wine, richly scented and much sought after. Numerous medals have been won, including: gold at Brussels in 1910, at Ghent in 1913, at Paris in 1969; silver at Bordeaux in 1907, at Paris in 1963; large-module silver at Paris in 1961.
MM. Guy and Michel Janoueix also own, in Pomerol, Château Samson, and in Saint-Émilion, Château Petit-Clos-Figeac, Château Grand-Fortin and the Domaine de la Bourrue.
Sales are made by direct sale to private customers, on site and by mail order.
