Château Grand-Pey-Lescours

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru • 25.6 HA

The estate

In brief

Formerly the property of Baroness Arthur de Brezets, and acquired in 1924 by the Escure family, Château Grand-Pey-Lescours is located at the foot of the Saint-Émilion hillsides.
Its vineyard, with an area of 25.6 hectares in a single block, is planted only with fine grape varieties, on a silica-gravel soil with abundant traces of alios.
It is farmed using traditional cultivation methods by the Escure family; however, the arrival of Jean-Marie Bouldy and the young Escure generation at the head of this estate has brought new ideas and innovative methods to enhance this domain, following the practices applied at Château Bellisle Mondotte, owned by the Escures, and at Château Bellegrave, owned by Monsieur Bouldy.
Thus in 1994, a new vinification policy was introduced, producing a wine from a harmonious proportion of young and old vines on this silica-gravel terroir. Disbudding, leaf removal, thinning and hand harvesting with sorting make it possible to make the wine in the best quantitative conditions. The estate has been converting to organic farming since 2011.
On tasting, this wine offers on the nose an elegant bouquet of well-ripened black fruit; on the palate its structure is fleshed out by round tannins; finally, a fine balance is pleasantly underlined by a most agreeable lingering finish.
A prestige cuvée, in small volume, from certain old vines is also produced. This wine, aged in barrels (25% new), has the same characteristics as the traditional Grand Pey de Lescours, enhanced with a delicate and harmonious oakiness.
These wines, like those of Château Bellisle Mondotte, are distributed directly to a private clientele, but also through the négociant trade and wine merchants specialising in the sale of fine, top-end wines to refined and gourmet restaurants.
