The estate

In brief

The Château de Barbe Blanche vineyard covers an area of 28 hectares, in the heart of the A.O.C. Lussac-Saint-Émilion. Located not far from the Gallo-Roman villa of Lucciacus (hence Lussac), where excavations attest to the early cultivation of the vine, Château de Barbe Blanche is the heir to a long and rich history.
Holder of the châtellenie of Puynormand, inherited from his mother Jeanne d’Albret, Henri de Navarre, the future Henri IV, victor in 1587 of the battle of Coutras, a small town a few kilometres away, is said to have greatly appreciated the excellence of the Barbe Blanche wine.
Owned in the 18th century by the Favereau family, barristers at the Parlement of Bordeaux, Barbe Blanche was judiciously run and produced highly esteemed wines, notably by the monks of the powerful neighbouring Cistercian abbey of Faize, one of whose abbots was none other than the brother of the author of the Lettres Persanes, Charles de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu.
Passing around 1800 to a bourgeois family of Abzac, the Jay-Bodets, some of whose members distinguished themselves in the agricultural shows of this region of the Saint-Émilionnais, the Barbe Blanche vineyard continued its development on the best terroirs.
In 2000, Les Vignobles André Lurton acquired 50% of the shares of this estate.
Château de Barbe Blanche produces a red wine dominated by the Merlot grape variety. This wine is coloured, round, supple and of great finesse, but nevertheless has firm tannins that predispose it to long ageing. The estate also produces Châteaux Prieuré Lalande and Tour de Ségur.
