Château Laniote has belonged to the same family for several centuries. It is today the property of M. and Mme de la Filolie, heirs of M. Freymond Rouja.
The history of the town of Saint-Émilion tells that in the 8th century a monk, Émilion, came to dig a cave in which he settled. In this hermitage there remain to this day a high altar, his pulpit in a round-arched niche, and his bed, which became his tomb. The Chapelle de la Trinité was built in the 13th century above the hermitage for the Saint, founder of the town. The catacombs, a cemetery of very ancient date whose walls are hollowed with funerary niches, were later used as an ossuary. These vestiges of a glorious past rich in art and history still belong to the La Filolie family.
