The estate

In brief

La Serre is located in the very heart of Saint-Émilion, two hundred metres from the town’s ramparts.
The residence was built at the end of the 17th century by Romain de Labaym. His very old family included jurats, barristers at the parlement of Bordeaux and five mayors from 1541 to 1728. He himself was styled “sieur de Lasserre”.
Planted on the famous eastern clay-limestone plateau, the vineyard extends over 7 hectares, between Villemaurine and Trottevieille. It is composed of Merlot (80%) and Cabernet (20%), grape varieties typical of this region. Its average age is 30 years. Quarries form part of the subsoil and were at one time converted into cellars; the “roof” of these is formed of clay, Pyrenean quartz pebbles and a few centimetres of earth that allow the vine to survive. This geological structure gives a wine with a fine bouquet and great longevity.
Vinification is carried out according to the most traditional methods, with a maceration of three weeks; ageing in oak casks, partly renewed every year, lasts 16 months, which allows the wine to successfully undergo each year the two compulsory tastings that maintain its quality and authenticity in the classification of the Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Émilion.
Average production is 2,500 cases of 12 bottles. Sales are handled directly by the owner.
The d’Arfeuille family also owns Château Tessendey in Fronsac.
