Château Canon-La-Gaffelière

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru • 19.5 HA

The estate

In brief

At the beginning of the 19th century, the château was called La Gaffelière-Boitard, after its owner, M. Boitard de la Poterie.
In the middle of that century the name Canon la Gaffelière appears, though its origin is entirely uncertain, except for La Gaffelière, which is the name of the place.
In 1953, Pierre Meyrat, who was known in Saint-Émilion as one of the first mayors to restore the town to prominence, acquired the property.
In 1971, the estate was bought by Count von Neipperg, but it was in 1983 that his son, Count Stephan von Neipperg, settled on the property. With him, the château has returned to the top of the Grands Crus Classés, as in the 1940s.
The vineyard of Château Canon-La Gaffelière, with an area of about 20 hectares, is located on the southern slope of the Saint-Émilion hillsides.
Under the impetus of the new owners, the Counts of Neipperg, major changes have been made there, in particular the construction of an ultra-modern vat room allowing vinification to be managed and controlled precisely. On the other hand, the old methods of ageing have been maintained. Indeed, the wines continue to be aged until bottling in oak barrels of up to 100% new or one year old, in an air-conditioned cellar. The stainless steel vats have been replaced by wooden vats with a pneumatic punching-down system.
The wines of Canon-La Gaffelière, of distinguished elegance, stand out for their complexity and their extremely developed bouquet, which give them an honoured place among the Premiers Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Émilion.
