The estate

In brief

The name Despagne has been attached to the land of Saint-Émilion for more than half a millennium. The oldest known document concerning the family records the baptism of the son of Pierre Despagne, ox ploughman, in 1665. His descendant, Louis Despagne, born in 1789, was to be the architect of the estate. In 1812, he settled at the place called “Corbin” and planted a few arpents of vines. On his death in 1845, his son Jean took over and gave this growth the framework it still has today. At the time, it was known as Grand Corbin-Propriétaire Despagne. The name Grand Corbin-Despagne appeared at the end of the 19th century.
Subsequent generations ran the family estate and made it prosper.
The wine was renowned from the end of the 19th century, as attested by the various medals won in Paris in 1895, 1900, 1904 and 1905.
From 1922, Paul Despagne took over the château and gave the growth its full dimension. From then on, for more than 40 years, Grand Corbin-Despagne was recognised for the consistency and the very high quality of its wines. In 1954, at the first classification of Saint-Émilion wines, Grand Corbin-Despagne became a Grand Cru Classé.
Since 1996, the 7th generation of the Despagne family, represented by François Despagne, has directed the estate and puts all its energy into making Château Grand Corbin-Despagne a reference and an ambassador for Saint-Émilion, as demonstrated by its place as a Grand Cru Classé.
Moreover, this estate has been accredited since 2005 in sustainable farming for a lasting economy (Terra Vitis charter), and since the 2010 vintage the vineyard has been run under organic farming with Agrocert certification.
