It was in this place, formerly the property of the Chevaliers d’Aux, descendants of the Counts of Armagnac, that the pataches criss-crossing the stony roads of the region used to stop. These Médoc stagecoaches gave their name to this staging post, which was sold as National Property at the Revolution.
One of these pataches came one day to immortalise, on the label, the era of long, bumpy journeys and of stops where it was good to quench one’s thirst… with a glass of good wine.
A wine like Château Patache d’Aux is not produced, it is created, gently, without folly, with just the right amount of measured ambition. Every year, the vintage is guided little by little, but with a sustained strength that makes it possible, in the calm of the cellars, to make a powerful and round wine. From oak barrels to cork stoppers, it is the owners’ scrupulous rigour in their choices that allows the oldest vintages to reach us intact.
Traditional vinification gives the wine of Château Patache d’Aux its identity and its own characteristics: this deep ruby colour, these powerful but so well melted tannins that are typical of wines for long keeping.
