With its first traces dating from 1557, Château La Haye is today one of the oldest estates of Saint-Estèphe, whose absolutely remarkable characteristic lies in its transmission within a single family for nearly four centuries. Thus, Pierre Marie Bernard de St Affrique II, who sold Château La Haye in 1927, descended directly from Sire Janot Bernard, lord of the fief of La Vallée at Leyssac in 1557. The coat of arms of the St Affrique family still adorns today the engraved wood of the château’s entrance door.
But the charm of its past remains attached to the legendary couple formed by Diane de Poitiers and Henri II, who loved, it is said, to meet in its prestigious setting. As proof, their interlaced monogram H and D, engraved on the entablature of the entrance door, which is found in dozens of places at the châteaux of Fontainebleau and Anet.
Today this estate, where wine and history are imbued with nobility, is owned by M. Cardon.
Combining tradition and new techniques, M. Cardon draws from his rare and precious land wines with undisputed credentials. A nose combining elegance and power, a smooth and gentle palate, fine and integrated tannins: such are today the assets of this “cru bourgeois recognised in Bordeaux as well as abroad as one of the best of St Estèphe” (1929 – Féret 10th edition of Bordeaux et ses Vins).
