In the 16th century, the powerful Ségur-Cabanac family, before becoming owners of great Médoc vineyards such as Latour and Lafite, held numerous estates. One of them, Count Joseph-Marie de Ségur-Cabanac, “prince of the vines”, lord of Cabanac and other places — Cabanac and Villagrains is a small commune in the Graves south of Labrède — owned land in the commune of Saint-Estèphe. Boundary stones, which still bear his name “Ségur Cabanac” and mark out certain plots, bear witness to this.
Coming from a family of winegrowers for seven generations and originally from Saint-Estèphe, Guy Delon, already owner in Saint-Julien of Château Moulin de La Rose but unable to enlarge it, bought Château Ségur de Cabanac in 1985.
At the place known as “Le Port de Saint-Estèphe” he built a cellar, a vat room and farm buildings.
This vineyard is made up of 12 plots, located on the best gravel rises of the appellation, facing the Gironde. It adjoins the greatest crus of the commune such as Calon, Phélan and Meyney… It is planted with old vines consisting mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, whose harmonious proportion gives a wine of great class, fine, refined and long-lived.
