This estate takes its name from two words of Old French and Latin: “Puy” meaning mound, and “Castéra” (Castrum) meaning camp or fortress. Indeed, the geographical position of château Puy Castéra clearly indicates the site of an old fortified camp.
In 1973, the vines had given way to wasteland… But it would take more than that to discourage Henri Marès and his children, who bought it.
From 1974, with his son Christian and following the advice of Professor Peynaud and their oenologist Jacques Boissenot, he planted 12 hectares of vines and 14 more in the following years. While waiting for their first harvest, they built and equipped a vat room and cellars able to take the production of the 30 hectares.
In 1978, their efforts were rewarded by the château’s admission to the rank of Cru Bourgeois, and it was reclassified at the same rank in 2003. It was also in 2003 that the Jullien de Pommerol family joined the company of château Puy Castéra.
The wines of château Puy Castéra are remarkable for their aromas and the elegance of their tannins. For this reason they improve with age.
Since 2011, S.C.E. château Puy Castéra has been a member of the first association for the EMS of Bordeaux wine certified ISO 14001.
