The estate

In brief

In 1846, then in 1850, Charles Cocks, in both the English and French editions of “Bordeaux, ses environs et ses Vins”, noted that at the place called Les Granges in the commune of Blaignan, the Misses Seguin produced about 45 tonneaux of red wine. In 1874, Édouard Féret specified that they were at Les Granges d’Or with a production of 60 tonneaux. In the following editions we learn that this property belonged to a certain Landard, a paymaster-treasurer in Saint-Louis. Then it changed hands again and in 1922 belonged to J. Baronnet. At that time, the vineyard so worked took the name Château des Granges d’Or; it then produced 90 tonneaux and commanded an estate of 72 hectares in a single block.
In 1973, it became the property of Messieurs Lleu and Joannon, who a few years later created the société anonyme du Château des Granges d’Or. Needless to say, when they took over this estate everything had to be redone, in the vineyard as in the cellars.
Today the vineyard produces wines that are generally well constituted and appreciated (silver medal for the 1998 vintage at the Concours Général Agricole in Paris). In 2000 the construction of a new ageing cellar allowed better-suited barrel ageing, which gives the wines a discreet, fine and delicate oakiness, in the tradition of Médoc wines.
