The name Tour des Termes comes from an old feudal-type tower, still standing today, located on a plot called Les Termes, which is thought to have been part of an ancient Gallo-Roman site.
At the end of the last century, château Tour des Termes was only a modest growth producing 20 barrels a year, but it was already listed as a Cru Bourgeois. Pierre Anney, from an old winegrowing family and owner of a neighbouring growth, acquired it in 1939. He grouped his entire vineyard under the château Tour des Termes label and built a house, cellars and outbuildings.
In 1979, his son Jean and grandson Christophe took over the property and increased the area to 32 hectares of vines, but they decided to devote only the best terroirs to producing château Tour des Termes (a pioneering idea at the time), namely 15 hectares of vines with an average age of 30 years.
Rigorous efforts are made to keep it at the highest level; from the 2006 vintage, 20% of the volume of château Tour des Termes will come from vinification in barrels and 1000 bottles will be kept as a reference each year under the Alexaure brand.
Château Tour des Termes is among the best Crus Bourgeois of the appellation; it has received, and regularly receives, superb tasting scores in numerous French and international reviews. M. Anney also owns château Saint Corbian and château Haut-Baradieu, neighbouring Tour des Termes. Together these three growths form an estate of 22 hectares of vines in production.
