In 1881, Édouard Féret wrote: ” The estate of Bellegrave-du-Poujeau is situated, as its name indicates, on gravelly ground very well suited to the cultivation of the vine. Its vineyard, which dates back more than twenty years, is planted exclusively with the best grape varieties of the Médoc. It produces a highly esteemed wine, considered one of the best of the commune. ”
In 1956, it disappeared following the frost that destroyed almost the whole of the Bordeaux vineyard. Twenty-five years later, Denise and Jean Roy began its reconstitution.
Having become a widow, Mme Roy sold the vineyard in 1999 to Jean-Pierre Cantelaube, her neighbour, who runs Château Maurian de Prade, a wine-growing unit that came from part of Château Duthil Haut Cressan, Cru Bourgeois in 2003.
Sheltered from the north winds by the pine forest, Bellegrave du Poujeau, by virtue of its medium size, benefits from constant monitoring and treatments well adapted to the climatic conditions, which make it possible to obtain healthy, fully ripe harvests. The grape varieties are vinified in small vats, allowing both quantitative and qualitative selection. Depending on the vintage, the vatting time is two to four weeks.
The wines obtained are then aged for 16 to 18 months in barrel, for 20,000 bottles of Château Bellegrave du Poujeau.
The wines of this estate are marketed by the property itself.
