The estate

In brief

Château Lamothe was built in the 16th century behind a Merovingian fort. In 1814, Jean-François de Borie sold Lamothe to a négociant of British origin, Mr Dowling. In 1855, when the château was classified Second Growth, the owner was Mme Veuve Baptiste, followed by the Dubédat family and, at the beginning of the 20th century, Louis Espagnet ran Lamothe. In 1961, Jean Despujols bought 8 hectares from M. Bastit Saint Martin.
Since 1989, Guy Despujols has run the property.
The vineyard has an average age of over 40 years and draws its sap and balance from a deep soil of gravel and clay. The harvest is carried out with great care in successive passes (5 to 7), and only the richest and most typical juices go into the blend of Château Lamothe.
The rich, refined wine will need time to acquire all its finesse and complexity. From a few years to a few decades after bottling, the enthusiast can choose the best moment to satisfy their personal taste and savour a privileged moment.
