The estate

In brief

Château Coutet is one of the oldest estates in the Sauternes region. Its construction dates back to the late 13th or early 14th century, as evidenced by its tower, similar in design to those of the military establishments of the English occupation of Guyenne.
Another vestige of the period is a second tower, located in the vineyard, intended for the rearing of pigeons and peacocks by the Gascon lords.
In the early 18th century, a considerable remodelling transformed the main residence. The grounds were embellished with a superb French-style park.
In 1788, the estate was acquired by Gabriel-Barthélémy-Romain de Filhot, President of the Parlement de Bordeaux and already owner of Château Filhot in Sauternes.
In 1794, M. de Filhot was guillotined and the property passed to his grandson, the Marquis Romain-Bertrand de Lur-Saluces. Château Coutet thus stood alongside the famous Château d’Yquem, Château Filhot and Château de Malle, in an ensemble that made the Marquis de Lur-Saluces the world’s largest producer of sweet white wines.
In 1922, Château Coutet was bought by Louis Guy, a manufacturer of hydraulic presses and winemaking equipment: this transaction meant its separation from Château d’Yquem. It was at this time that the famous “Cuvée Madame” was born, in honour of Madame Rolland-Guy, wife of the new owner.
Marcel Baly and his two sons, Philippe and Dominique, acquired Château Coutet in 1977. They quickly decided to renovate the vineyard and the farm buildings.
Today, the quality of the wines bears witness to the work accomplished: Château Coutet remains one of the most renowned of the Sauternes-Barsac appellation.
The wines of Château Coutet are marketed exclusively by Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. -33250 Pauillac. Tel.: 05 56 73 20 20, Fax: 05 56 73 20 44.
