What resources are used to carry out historical research?

Éditions Féret holds all nineteen editions of Bordeaux et ses Vins, which list a large majority of the wine estates of the Place de Bordeaux, as well as a large amount of the raw data used to compile them. Éditions Féret can then determine how an estate’s details have evolved over the centuries.

The data collected by Éditions Féret

  • • The classification
  • • The ascending order in which the estate is listed in Bordeaux et ses vins
  • • The number of casks produced
  • • The names of the owners and operators
  • • The changes in the name of the château over time
  • • The historical engraving and/or photograph depicting the estate in Bordeaux et ses vins
  • • The emergence of the wine brand: the first time the word “château” appeared before the name of the estate
  • • The list of medals awarded at the universal exhibitions
  • • The changes in the size of the estate
  • • The place of the commune in Bordeaux production

Cartographic research

Éditions Féret holds a precise map of the Gironde département dating from 1888, and part of the Belleyme map from the early nineteenth century. It also works with maps such as the Cassini map of 1790 and the État-Major map of 1866.

Input from Féret authors

Depending on the depth of research you need, we also call on our authors, renowned historians, to carry out additional research where necessary, by consulting the departmental archives or through other historical sources of information.

What is the legal value of historical research?

Bordeaux et ses vins, a reference work, is often presented before administrative and legal departments, which regard it and accept it as a reliable source.

Éditions Féret officially certifies all the material produced during historical research, and systematically states the source of the information collected, which gives real strength to the positions argued.

In the same spirit, the collection of Bordeaux et ses Vins also makes it possible to trace the life of wine estates, which can prove valuable when preparing applications for classification.
