The estate

In brief

This illustrious cru, whose name in old French meant “too anoi” or “too ennuie” (in reference to the demanding work of the land), is situated on one of the best exposed parts of the famous Pomerol plateau. It was acquired in 1953 by Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, who have been running the estate ever since.

The diversity of the soils – half gravel on clay, half deep black clay – on a bed of iron dross, gives the wine power, depth and great complexity.

The vineyard, which was partly spared the severe frosts of 1956, has an average age of 35 years. The vines are trained using traditional methods (ploughing, thinning, leaf removal) and ideally harvested in two or three afternoons. Fermentation takes place in cement vats, and the wine is aged in oak barrels, half of which are renewed each vintage.

Château Trotanoy is one of the most sought-after wines in the appellation, with exceptional ageing potential that can extend over several decades in great vintages.
