Château de Chantegrive, one of the largest winegrowing estates in the Graves region, takes its name from the music thrush, a well-known bird in the Bordeaux region. Attracted by instinct and greed, this thrush invades the vineyards at harvest time to taste the sun-drenched grapes, particularly on the well-exposed slopes of our estate, hence the name “Chantegrive”. The estate covers around 95 hectares, spread between the communes of Cérons, Podensac, Illats and Virelade, on gravel terraces formed by the Garonne in the Quaternary period. The exceptional quality of the soils and the south-facing aspect of the vineyards are crucial to our high-quality production. Since 1966, the consolidation efforts undertaken by Mr and Mrs Lévêque have transformed Chantegrive into one of the best-equipped wineries in the region, combining tradition (growing methods, wine-making) with modern winemaking techniques. We have ultra-modern vats, winemaking cellars and visitor reception rooms, as well as a superb 800-barrel oak cellar for red wines and an underground cellar dedicated to ageing wines, with a 240-barrel cellar for our ‘Caroline’ wines. In 1990, Marie-Hélène Lévêque joined her parents at the estate and in 2006, Hubert de Boüard from Château L’Angélus brought his expertise to the winemaking. Our commitment to the environment is paramount. In July 2017, our approach was recognised by the award of HVE3 certification, testifying to our constant desire to improve our environmental practices. In 2021, our commitment was honoured by the award of the “Ambassadeur de Graves” label, a distinction of excellence unique in France. This initiative aims to highlight wines that embody the expertise and excellence of the appellation’s winegrowers.
